Pattaya businesses have been repairing the influx of the tourists who are expected to bring in an accumulation of 3 million USD

A drunken brawl involving 2 US Navy servicemen assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln outside a bar in Pattaya was reported on 3rd August 2026. After a Thai citizen reported the incident, the sailors were sent back to the ship. The USS Abraham Lincoln strike group and over 5000 sailors that man the ships docked in Laem Chabang port, Thailand 2nd September 2026.
The warship and its operators spent over a record 285 days at sea deployed in the middle east. Lincoln has been supporting the US war against Iran. Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier reported supply, sanitation and even plumbing issues heavily affecting some sailors attempting to jump overboard. US defense secretary Pete Hegseth pushed back against these reports claiming that conditions are completely misrepresented.

“Our arrival in Laem Chabang provides a well-deserved opportunity for our Sailors and Marines to rest and recharge. It also underscores the strong and enduring partnership and alliance between the United States and Thailand,” said Rear Adm. Robert E. Loughran, USS Abraham Lincoln strike group commander.
In the interest of security US sailors and marines are reportedly restricted from visiting Pattaya’s Soi 6 and Soi 7 street as they contain a high concentration of entertainment venues and bars selling alcohol, with large crowds gathering in confined spaces.
Many of the service members are expected to make a visit to Pattaya, a nearby popular beach town. Thai defense ministry officials have reiterated that the Lincoln’s stop would strictly be for rest and recovery with no joint military exercises or operations planned before leaving Thailand on 6th September. In anticipation of this, Pattaya businesses have been repairing the influx of the tourists who are expected to bring in an accumulation of 3 million USD to the tourism economy with each sailor expected to spend 100 to 150 USD per day. Simultaneously, provincial officials requested businesses not to take advantage of the influx by raising prices or overcharging visitors.

Authorities added that additional security personnel will be added to increase safety without causing unnecessary alarm during the visit, although that goal proved difficult. Days ahead of the docking, security personnel arrested and detained several residents on the basis of prostitution, fined and later released. Crime suppression deputy chief at Pattaya, said that crackdown on street prostitution would continue. Minors forced to work as vendors or beggars would be targeted as well.
The due diligence comes amidst Thailand’s search and series of policies that look for “quality tourists.” These included zero tolerance policies on tourists who misused or over stayed visa. It went as far as shortening visa free stay for a dozen nationalities including Singapore.

Ironically enough, Pattaya is widely known as a rowdy tourist destination with a vibrant nightlife and a bustling sex tourism scene. However this was not always the case for the once quiet fishing village. US servicemen stationed in the region would frequent Pattaya which resulted in word of the scenic town to quickly spread among their ranks. Once the 1960s rolled in, troops from ships docked conveniently close to Sattahip naval base and U Tapao airfield would use Pattaya as Rest and Recreation hub. Soon, a legal framework took shape which allowed Pattaya to flourish into Thailand’s “Sin City” that catered to American troops visiting from the Vietnam War.
Although prostitution is illegal according to Thailand’s law, given that the industry contributes billions to the broader national economy, it is generally overlooked. This reality proves that Pattaya authorities’ sweep across sex work performative at best.

“‘As many as 50 people, including prostitutes were arrested’ That is literally nothing. Bigger clubs have over 100 girls working per night. This is just paying lip service because someone didn’t pay the bribes” One online user quipped.
The public opinion on the large influx of tourist from the US navy were mixed but generally hopeful that on the possible economic benefits.
“The risk to health and safety, as the influx of a large number of customers may increase the likelihood of sexual exploitation and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases,” said Pipatpong Fakfare, an associate professor at Bangkok University’s School of Humanities and Tourism Management.
